What is a Grant for Education?

Grants are monetary aids provided to individuals or organizations, usually from the federal or state government. They are typically need-based, which means that it is the financial component that determines if one is eligible for it.

What is a Scholarship?

College scholarships are basically awards granted to students. They are sometimes referred to as "financial aid awards". Scholarships usually cover tuition and other school fees. It may or may not provide allowances for board and lodging, books, and personal expenses. Scholarships are handed out based on a criterion which mirrors the standards of the donor. Usually scholarships are categorized as merit, need, sociology, institutional, and general.

There are many types of Scholarships for college and below is a quick breakdown and description of each one...

Merit: Merit-based college scholarships are given to students who excel in the fields of academics, athletics and arts. In addition, most scholarships are based on merit.

Need: Some college scholarships specifically reach out to financially challenged individuals. Need-based scholarships may also cover living costs aside from tuition fees. However, applicants for this type of scholarship must show sufficient proof of financial need in order to qualify.

Sociology: Sociology-based scholarships are offered to individuals based on gender, race, religion or nationality. Most of these student scholarships are provided by non-government organizations whose advocacy includes equality for the marginalized sectors of society. There are specific organizations who provide grants and scholarships to young moms, single moms, older women, and African-American women who are going back to college.

Institutional: Institutions such as colleges and universities also award scholarships to prospective students. If you have a college or university in mind, it would be good to get in touch with the admissions office to inquire about institutional scholarships.

General: Some companies or corporations give scholarships for college, based on their own standards, to the children of their employees. This type falls under the general category.

Comparing Student Scholarships & Grants for Education...

Do you know that up to 70% of the total number of college students have colleg scholarships, educational grants or other student aids to back them up? According to the US Census Bureau, 18.4 million students are enrolled in colleges and universities nationwide. Therefore, if you do the math, only 5.52 million students are independent of financial aids. In other words, college is indeed a financial challenge.

Although college grants and scholarships seldom cover 100% of school expenses, they can definitely give any college student the financial boost they badly need. Grants and scholarships will allow college students to go on with their schoolwork without worrying about their tuition or other school fees.

As previously stated, educational grants are typically need-based. Applicants with greater financial needs are more prioritized. On the other hand, free college scholarships are not awarded based on need alone. There are types of scholarships that are awarded based on skills, gender, nationality, or any factor the donor deems appropriate.

Take note: Some college scholarships come with a "bond". It is a contract that requires the scholarship recipient to work for the donor over a period of time. In case of non-fulfilment, the recipient will be required to pay a certain amount of money.

Definitely, college grants and scholarships are indispensable aids to both aspiring and continuing college students. With their help, college moms can sail through school without worrying about tuition and other school fees. Fortunately, the State or Federal government provides student assistance to deserving applicants. I am currently starting my 9th year as a Corrections Officer for Orange County Sheriff's Office in Goshen,NY. Working as a Corrections Officer has allowed me to witness that Social Work must be in high demand. Observing the young society in and out of jail has convinced me to go back to college and pursue social work. I want to make a positive impact in people's lives and for that reason January 2010 I intend to achieve an associate Degree in Human Services (A.S.) at Orange County Community College in Middletown, NY(full-time). With the demands of being a Corrections Officer, a mom of a honor-roll & athletic thirteen year old daughter,an eleven month old daughter, and bills that my husband and I just don't seem to get freed from. I have to believe that no matter what...THE SKY IS THE LIMIT!

Hello, I am a 38 year old single parent of a 16 year honor roll student. This past year has been very challenging for me. I am enrolled as a full-time student and am recently unemployed. I have continuously been seeking work. I am not asking for a handout but just a helping hand. Thank you.

Hello, Now that I am 51 yrs old, I want to go back to school to learn a profession. Fiinancial independence is my goal. I didn't have the opportunity to get a good education prior to getting married and having children. Actually my mother was my role model, she taught me how to be a mother and a housewife. Pursuing an education wasn't even a a topic in my household. It was just assumed I was going to be a mother and a housewife, end of story. Well I soon found out, it wasn't a good idea, to not have a profession to fall back on. I never thought to myself, what if the housewife role doesn't work out (and no one told me otherwise). I now know the importance of having a deeper education, and that is what I want now. I have spent the last 25 yrs, raising a family, running a household, working several part-time jobs and being in a very unhappy marriage. I realize education is the answer to a better life for myself. Being able to choose, is a much better alternative, than not being able to choose your circumstances. Now that I have raised my family, I am now ready to go back to school and learn a profession. However I do not have the financing to go back, besides any money we could come up with, will go toward my children's education's since they are 18,21 and 24. Despite my husband making a 6 figure income. His money is not mine to do with what I want. So once again my circumstances are holding me back, like I said I don't have a whole bunch of choices. Unless I could receive a scholarship to help me, and I do need help, I have nowhere else to turn. I am hoping with all of my being that my prayers will be answered through scholarships4moms.net. I want to overcome my circumstances desperately, it has been way to long and I'd like to spend the remaining years I have left making my own choices and pursuing happiness, since my circumstances have left me very unhappy with my life. I haven't had the opportunity to experience very much in my life, and this scholarship would open many doors for me and possibly a new life of happiness.

My goal is to get the bachelor of nutrition science from kaplan but have to wait until I am all done with my associate programs. Hello, my name is Stefanie and I am a single mother of a 2 yr old and a 6 month old. I work full time at a Daycare and I attend school full time at night. I was raised in a single parent home and I know how difficult it is sometimes to watch your parent struggle. I do not want my kids to be a witness to our struggle. I returned to school to complete my training as a nurse not only to be a help to the community but to also make enough money to financially support my family. Because funding was cut for the 2009-2010 school year I don't have enough financial aid to cover my tuition and I am scrapping to make ends meet. A scholarship would truly be a blessing to me at this time. I can only leave it in God's hands and God bless to all that are in need of this scholarship.

Hello, I am a 23 year old mother of 3 children, one who is severely disabled by a premature birth and complications. My husband who is a cop in the Air Force makes little enough to pay for me to go to college. So I have decided to further my education to teach my children it is never too late to go after your dreams. Mine include being a Social Worker and helping the young children of our future into adulthood. With my husband's earning and the fact that we have nothing left for childcare or tuition I am afraid this dream will never see fruition. I want more than anything to apply my degree and help my family earn money so my husband can one day comfortabley leave the military. Any help would be greatly appreciated. But I cannot find any. I have searched online to no avail and I think this is a tragedy. With our economy being what it is why can we not offer more help to raise the bar for workers with degrees and allow those better qualified a chance in the workforce? I want my chance, more than anything and I have no idea how I'll ever get it.

I am a single mother of an 11yr old son. I have made it my mission to finsih school and Im currently in the last year of a Masters program. Trying to maintain work and school has been on of the biggest challenges I have done in my life. With my support system of family and friends I dont think I would have been able to get this far. After all these years of school I have found myself in debt of thousands of dollars. Getting a grant for $10,000 would help anyone trying to get a college degree.
