Organizations and Institutions Giving College Scholarships

Students who are looking for organizations giving college scholarships would be glad to know that there are hundreds of funding agencies out there. Here are a few examples of those organizations:

Government-sponsored Free College Scholarships or Educational Grants

The US government provides grants to eligible students who want to pursue a post-secondary education. Grants, unlike loans, do not need to be repaid. Some of the federal grants available are the following:

  • The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program provides grants of up to $4,000 per year to students who intend to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families.

  • The Pell Grant Program provides need-based grants to low-income undergraduate and certain graduate students to promote access to post-secondary education. Students may use their grants at any one of approximately 5,400 participating post-secondary institutions. Educational grant amounts are dependent on the student's expected family contribution; the cost of attendance; the student's enrollment status; and whether the student attends for a full academic year or less.

  • The National Science & Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (National SMART Grant) grant is available to full-time students who are eligible for the Federal Pell Grant and who are majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, or engineering or in a foreign language determined critical to national security.

Institutional Scholarships for College

Colleges and universities provide institutional grants to help make up the difference between college costs and what a family can raise through income, savings, loans, and student earnings.

Other institutional grants, known as merit awards or merit scholarships, are awarded on the basis of academic achievement. Some merit awards are offered only to students whose families demonstrate financial difficulties, while others are awarded without regard to a family's finances.

Private Organizations

Private organizations also offer scholarships to students who plan to go to college. Here are some examples of privately-funded scholarships:

  • The United Negro College Fund is the country's biggest and oldest scholarship organization that supports the education of African American students. Those who are enrolled at a college or a university that is a member of the United Negro College Fund are qualified to apply for this scholarship.

  • The New York Women in Communications Foundation annually awards college scholarships to permanent residents of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania who are attending or planning to attend college and major in a communications-related field, including advertising, broadcasting, communications, English, film, journalism, marketing, new media, or public relations.

  • Unions

Considering the needs of their members and the rights they uphold, this is one great source of scholarship funding, and therefore offers a reasonable amount of college scholarship programs.

  • Military

The military offers scholarships for college programs which can fully pay tuition and miscellaneous fees. In return, the student though has to be part of the military school or should at least serve in the military in line with his educational degree.

  • Religious organizations

College scholarships from religious organizations are usually made available to their members who need financial assistance in terms of their education.

  • Corporations

This is among the most popular organizations which provide scholarships for college and educational grants. Corporations offer these programs to attract employees to their line of business. They also provide these scholarships as part of their employees' benefits.

  • Money does not come easily these days. This is a sad fact that everyone must accept. However, college moms can learn how to work around this challenge. Scholarships and college come hand in hand. Thus, moms who entertain the thought of pursuing a higher education must exhaust all the scholarship opportunities they can find. College scholarships for parents prove that it is never too late for moms and dads to pursue their yearning for a college degree.

Hi, I am Susan, mother of a very active 11 year old. As a single mother, things have been very difficult for me for several months now. I lost a 10 year job because of the economy, we lost our transportation several months ago due to a wreck and the insurance company of the guy that hit our car refused to pay for damages. Now, my son and I are close to losing our home because of the bills. I am currently enrolled online to a college near me to get a degree in AAS in business administration, but I need to take some of my courses in school and have no way to attend as well as all the other things that has been happening in our lives. I do hope we get the help we need for me to pursue the dreams I have for my son and myself in the future. I also hope the other ladies dreams come true for their families. Good luck everyone and may the Lord bless you.

I seem to be in the same position as a lot of you. I am a stay at home mom of a 2yr. old girl. I have about 1 year left of my Bachelor's degree, which has been hanging there since Spring 2008 because I am unable to afford to finish school. At present,I am paying back a student loan that I had to take out for one semester of school and it's proving to be costly. If I can't afford to pay more on the loan each month I don't get anywhere on paying it off. I paid about 5 months of payments on it and still owed more than what I started out with. I worked for 4 years and quit once I had my daughter. Now with only my husband's income and all the expenses we have to pay (utilities, gas for him to get to work, student loan, insurance, groceries, etc.) it is hard to come up with the money to finish school. Instead of spending what extra money we do end up with after payday we put it away in savings in case of a necessary expense due to the unstable economy. I know many of you stated that your husbands had been laid off and I know you are wanting to finish your education but due to the economic situation you are not able to. I am the same way, although my husband has not been laid off. My husband's job is very unstable at this time and he has already experienced one lay off and shorter work weeks as well.

I am a single mother of one child. I decided to pursue an MBA, thinking, when I graduated, I would find a "good-paying" job that would allow me to pay back my student loans. Unfortunately, the economy is on a down turn, companies are laying off (not hiring) and my pay is the same. In addition to all the expenses incurred with raising a child on one income, I now have this student loan that I am struggling to pay back. Are there any loan forgiveness grants, grants or companies, offering money to dissolve a graduate student loan for a single mother?

I am currently working for a Charter School as a Teacher's Aide for ESL. I am also a mother of two. I recently started attending a University for my Bachelors in Elementary Education. I did not qualify for Financial Aid for mothers and I have tried to find scholarships but they all say what school will you plan to attend but I am already attending one. I need some help in finding funds for school since I do have to drive out of town which is one hour away from where I live. Please help, I did take out a student loan but really don't want to be on these.

I am a mother of 3 girls. I only have 1 year left to get my bachelors. My problem is that I've been a stay at home mom for years, and my husband got laid-off a few months ago. Unemployment is barely enough to pay our bills. I got financial aid for the summer, but Fall 2009, Spring 2009, Summer I, and Summer II are all based on our last tax return; which is when he was working. I didn't qualify for anything! I really want to graduate and begin a real career, but I just can't afford it. I don't want to take out a loan because i don't know when I'll be able to repay it. Please help.

Hello, I am a mother of 2 and looking for a scholarship for massage school. I am an esthitician currently, but looking to do some work with cancer patients to reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure and just make their overall experience a little more peaceful. I can perform simple treatments with my current license, but to bill the insurance companies I need to be an LMP. A new Womens' Cancer Center is opening in Seattle (first in the US) and I would like to offer these little "moments of wellness" to everyone. Thank you.
