School Loans and Grants: Application Tips

If you are applying for a school loan or scholarship grant, your challenge is how to make a good impression and convince the admission officer to consider your application. That means, your application or required documents should exhibit your personal strengths.

The following are simple tips to increase your chances in qualifying for a college loan, grants and scholarships:

  • Be diligent
    • Make sure that you fill the bio-data and college scholarship application form with the correct information.
    • If you are applying by hand, avoid erasures by answering on a draft sheet then transferring your final answers on the original document.
    • Compile the documents with regards to the number given on the required sheet if there is one.
    • For those who are submitting via the internet, do not hesitate to use spell check before hitting the send button.
    • In writing your essays, make sure that your spelling and grammar is done perfectly. If possible, ask a trust worthy friend or a grammar expert to go over your material before submitting.

  • Be punctual
    • Submit requirements on time. The earlier you send your grant, loan or scholarship application, the higher the chance to avail of the program you want. If you are fortunate enough to make it through the first screening, make sure to maintain the same punctuality in the next processes.

  • Show character
    • Be respectful. The best way to gain someone's respect is to show respect. Don't hesitate to shake the interviewer's hand or greet them with a smile.
    • Self-awareness. The college scholarship program you are applying for should be based on your personal interest and not that of your parents' or friends'. Take note, most of the admission officers hold a Psychology degree or something close to it, so do not pretend to be something you are not.
    • Deal with past failures with humility. If your school records consist of a variety of letters (A, B, C, D, E, F), it is nothing you should be ashamed of. Remember, only a few students excel in all subjects. Explain yourself to the interviewer only when you are asked to. Also, it would be better to highlight on the positive things you have learned from your academic challenges.

Applying for a school loan is not hard at all. There are also different types of school loans and programs for college grants available for different individuals. Even college mothers, single moms, stay at home moms are entitled to scholarship programs.

Nikki - there should be an abundance of information available through your Base Education Office or Family Support Center. There is more than likely more than one college or University offering classes right there on the base. In that you are a military spouse, any programs such as this should be treating you as if you were on Main Street USA, if they are not, SPEAK UP!!! Good luck to you...and thanks to you and your husband for your service and sacrifice. God bless you.

My husband is in the military and we are currently stationed in Guam. I love being a stay-at-home mom, but I'm taking our future into consideration. I have a great desire to continue my education in online colleges. Is there any help for moms outside the continental U.S.?

My family recently relocated due to my spouse's job. I had to leave the job I had at the time. With today's economy it is hard to find a job without a degree. I have great experience but that doesn't always cut it. I want to go back to school to get a degree but finding the money to go and not have to work is very difficult. I have a student loan that is currently being paid on in a rehabilitation program and along with that and many other bills I do not see a clear path to getting into school without a job. However I am having a hard time finding a job because of the lack of a degree. I suppose I am in a catch 22 situation and need a little direction.

Do you have to be working to apply for this scholarship? I just turned 20 and have a 3-month old baby. I don't have time to work and my hubby works afternoon 'til early morning so that leaves me no availability time. Also, it talks alot about loans, is the scholarship in form of a grant too?

  9. No, you don't have to be employed to qualify for this scholarship. Read our FAQ and Terms & Conditions pages for more details. If you're up for our $10,000 scholarship, follow this link http://www.scholarships4moms.net/form.htm and register.

I'm a work-from-home mom raising 4 kids. I recently started college online in May '09. While I did qualify for a loan and a grant, my fear now is there won't be enough money to finish school. I have to get a Masters in my field of study for the job I am after. There is no way I can afford college on my own. What's the best thing I can do?

I am interested in going back to school because I have 3 kids and and I didn't get to finish high school because of family problems and waited till 2002 to go back to school because it was hard being a single mother not having enough money. I went to college to be a patient care tech but that wasn't enough to help out with because every dime went to bills. I feel like I'm getting older and I don't really have anything to back me up. I decided that i want to go back to school and be a pharmacy tech so I can give my family a better life and leave them something behind.

I am interested in going to school to become a nurse. I am 43 years old, married with two sons. My husband has been very ill for a very long time which has made life very difficult. He has had eight surgeries in three and a half years with four of them having to do with the nerves in his brain. I defaulted on a student loan from 1991 and have to face the consequences as a result, but I do not want this to stop me from getting help to continue my education in nursing. Many times I have been asked which hospital do I work at due to my extensive knowledge of the human body and illnesses. Jason, my husband, has had eighteen surgeries in twenty four years starting at sixteen, and the last one being last Friday. He has another big surgery coming up in eight weeks. If I can get a scholarship or a grant to go to nursing school that would be great. Assabet Valley Vocational High School in Marlborough, MA has a LPN program that is full time, thirty hours a week, and in ten months I could be certified as a LPN. Then I could continue my studies and become a registered nurse which I would love. I could contribute to society in a such a positive way, I just know it. No matter what, the next ten months of my life are going to go by, I might as well be in school and have a degree at the end of ten months so that I can better the lives of me and my family.

  14. Getting through life is not easy, but there's always someone out there to help. Scholarships4moms opens an opportunity for moms who want finish their degrees. Simply register at http://www.scholarships4moms.net/form.htm to have a chance of finishing your degree and be a certified LPN through our free scholarship money!
