Financial Aid for Single Mothers

In 1998, census records showed that there are approximately ten million single mothers in the US, a rapid growth since the 1970s - from around three million back then. Single mothers comprise about five-sixth of all single parents in US. Due to the vast growth in numbers in the past quarter century, financial aid for single mothers have slowly been taken into better consideration by the government. Monetary assistance such as college and government grants for single moms and, as well as food assistance, have been given priority in the government subsidy.

Why are financial aids for single mothers important?

Household responsibilities left to single mothers are not easy tasks; having to look after kids and at the same time earn for a living are huge obligations that mothers will never take for granted. Single mothers, regardless of the number of things they have to provide for, are mostly restricted to what they could give their children because of lack of income. No matter how hard they work, sometimes what they earn is just never enough. This is why some of them resort to having two jobs at the same time, which also means lessening their time with their children.

Financial aid for single mothers is practically favorable in easing mothers' responsibilities. The government offers assistance to single mothers who qualify the criteria, and not everyone does. It's not enough to be a single mother; the grant also considers the income the parent is earning. Even if the income earned is not really enough to support the entire household, it still goes above the income criterion of the program, hence the grant is disapproved.

Alternatives of Financial Aids for Single Mothers

Cases like these have become a predicament to single mothers who, although need the financial assistance, can't qualify for the assistance program. There are ways around this though; there are other sources of assistance that may come available for mothers who need financial support. Non-profit organizations like churches and other non-government and private organizations have certain programs that assist families in their financial needs.

For mothers who aspire to finish a degree or get into college, there are also college and government grants for single moms that are offered to help. This kind of financial aid for single mothers specifically aims to support mothers in their desire to attain a better level of education, enabling them to have more career opportunities with higher income.

If you are a single mother who is eager to finish a degree, but have limited funds, Scholarships for Moms will help you achieve your dreams through education grants. All you have to do is register for the offer and you instantly get a chance to be in school through a scholarship program.

I am a 34 year old, hispanic, mother of five in desperate need of a home for myself and my children. I am currently attending Colorado Technical University Online. I love everything about the online experience and being able to do it from home. I hated having to spend so much time away from my babies while on campus. Unfortunately, I will not be able to do this if I am homeless. I don't want to have to quit either. I love the school and I want to be able to stay.

Hi! I am a 47 yr old disabled, single mom of 3 wonderful, but busy, school age children. I was injured 7 yrs ago, and became partially paralized. Because of this I lost my job, house, car, and eventually my marriage. I ended having to file for bancruptcy. Now several yrs. later, and on the road to recovery, I am trying to go back to school . I can't go back to my prior job, because of physical limitations. I just started back in school for the first time in 30yrs, and have received a partiall scholarship. But I lost part of my disability, and am having a real hard time trying to make ends meet. Plus, now my computer is going bad and I have additional physical issues. I could really use some additional financial aid to at least get a new laptop computer , so I can continue my studies.( which are all online). Please, if you have any suggestions, or somewhere you can send me, I would really appreciate it. Thanks so much!

So I'm a little frustrated. We're in a financial hardship right now such that gaining extra skills in order to find work would be hugely beneficial to our family. However, I'm happily married and despite facing the possibility of losing our home to foreclosure and/or bankruptcy, my husband probably "makes too much money" for me to qualify for a grant - despite the fact that we have more expenses monthly than what we earn. I had an undergrad degree in Physics. But it seems like all job opportunities I see out there right now require that I know more than I do right now - specifically, I need more programming skills. I'm rusty on many of my programming skills and need to learn new programming languages and gain certifications, etc. I have a baby who is almost a year old now. What help is there for a mom like me? Or is the assistance only available to single mothers?

  17. Some grants for moms have specific requirements before you can qualify for the benefits, and this could be hard for mothers who are in need of financial help. But Scholarships4Moms offers this scholarship assistance not only to single mothers, but to any mother just like you. As long as you have the will to pursue your education for a better life, opportunities will come your way. You can register at http://www.scholarships4moms.net/form.htm to have a chance on this free scholarship money. Good luck!

Tiffanie, you have the world at your feet. If you have a child with a disability, you should be getting disability benefits from the state you live in. Not to mention, if you are a single mother, you also should have no problem getting financial aid for college for yourself. The sky is the limit. Good Luck, Jodi
