College scholarships and grants are the best financial sources college moms can hope for. Why? Because, they normally don't have to be repaid. But of course, they don't come easy. College scholarships and grants usually come with certain requirements and conditions. Not only that, there are different types you should learn about. Knowing the different kinds of college scholarships and grants will help you choose wisely which ones you apply for. As a result, you up your chances of landing a scholarship for college or a grant for education.

Grants are monetary aids provided to individuals or organizations, usually from the federal or state government. They are typically need-based, which means that it is the financial component that determines if one is eligible for it.
College scholarships are basically awards granted to students. They are sometimes referred to as "financial aid awards". Scholarships usually cover tuition and other school fees. It may or may not provide allowances for board and lodging, books, and personal expenses. Scholarships are handed out based on a criterion which mirrors the standards of the donor. Usually scholarships are categorized as merit, need, sociology, institutional, and general.
Merit: Merit-based college scholarships are given to students who excel in the fields of academics, athletics and arts. In addition, most scholarships are based on merit.
Need: Some college scholarships specifically reach out to financially challenged individuals. Need-based scholarships may also cover living costs aside from tuition fees. However, applicants for this type of scholarship must show sufficient proof of financial need in order to qualify.
Sociology: Sociology-based scholarships are offered to individuals based on gender, race, religion or nationality. Most of these student scholarships are provided by non-government organizations whose advocacy includes equality for the marginalized sectors of society. There are specific organizations who provide grants and scholarships to young moms, single moms, older women, and African-American women who are going back to college.
Institutional: Institutions such as colleges and universities also award scholarships to prospective students. If you have a college or university in mind, it would be good to get in touch with the admissions office to inquire about institutional scholarships.
General: Some companies or corporations give scholarships for college, based on their own standards, to the children of their employees. This type falls under the general category.
Do you know that up to 70% of the total number of college students have colleg scholarships, educational grants or other student aids to back them up? According to the US Census Bureau, 18.4 million students are enrolled in colleges and universities nationwide. Therefore, if you do the math, only 5.52 million students are independent of financial aids. In other words, college is indeed a financial challenge.
Although college grants and scholarships seldom cover 100% of school expenses, they can definitely give any college student the financial boost they badly need. Grants and scholarships will allow college students to go on with their schoolwork without worrying about their tuition or other school fees.
As previously stated, educational grants are typically need-based. Applicants with greater financial needs are more prioritized. On the other hand, free college scholarships are not awarded based on need alone. There are types of scholarships that are awarded based on skills, gender, nationality, or any factor the donor deems appropriate.
Take note: Some college scholarships come with a "bond". It is a contract that requires the scholarship recipient to work for the donor over a period of time. In case of non-fulfilment, the recipient will be required to pay a certain amount of money.
Definitely, college grants and scholarships are indispensable aids to both aspiring and continuing college students. With their help, college moms can sail through school without worrying about tuition and other school fees. Fortunately, the State or Federal government provides student assistance to deserving applicants. I received a loan for school in 1997 for cosmotology, I finished half of the course before having to quit to get a full time job to help out with household finances. I paid on my loan for awhile, and then had to go into deferral. I went back to college in 2000/2001 for general office a five month course at the community college, and proud to say I aced the class and graduated with honors. I worked for two years and then quit to stay at home with my new step daughter for two years. I went back to work in 2006 as a administrative assistant, then in June of 2008 I was laid off due to the economy. I finally found a job in April of this year, I only work two days a week a an administrative assistant. I share the work week with one other person, and with business being so slow I need to go back to college to either further my career or do what I love Interior Design Technology, But as of January of 2009 my student loan went into collections. Can still get help to go back to college? I want to have a career where I can take care of my household expenses and pay off this loan. I am the only one who can work in the household right now due to the fact that my mate is on medical leave from work for a undetermined amount of time, due to a back injury in November of 2007.
so if you are pregnant can you win this?

I am writing to see if there is some type of grant or loan that I can apply for, due to the fact that my husband is disabled and I am going to have to quit my job to take care of him. I was going to go to school full time on line and work full time, but now that I had to quit my job, I am not sure I can afford college now. I am hoping to get my GED first and then attend Ivy Tech College here in my town. I am the single mother of two and if I don't get into a career field soon, I am scared for our future. I can not continue to live on six-fifty an hour. It is simply not possible to live on with two children. I live in Indiana and I have done a lot of checking around, and there is nowhere I can find help. It is a small fee for the GED. It's $60 I believe. Is there anyway that I could get just a small scholarship from somewhere to take care of the GED part and maybe for the registration to Ivy Tech? Thank You, Malinda Graves - mother of two, IN

I am a mom of two-year old twin girls. I am married for a month now. I did not have the money to go to college after high school. I had to work as much as possible to help my family and take care of myself as well. I am married to a wonderful man and I am able to go back to school now. I would love to go back to school and make our life a little easier. I can't get a good job right now without a degree. I know that having a degree will help ease our worry and stress over money.
I am pursuing my masters degree in psychology. I will soon be separating after 20 years of marriage. Our son will be attending college starting next year and our daughter has 2 years of high school left. I have always worked part time so that I was available for the kids. My husband and I are educators and have stable jobs. But by the time insurances and taxes are deducted our income is almost half of our gross. Am I eligible for a scholarship?

I would like to receive more information for my cousin Desiree Phillips who is a proud mother of 3---mother of an art designer with the Houston Museums, a PHD graduate now living in Europe, teaching and reaching solutions for AID's, and lastly, an Ikea engineering designer and student in New York, with schooling being paid by Ikea. Desiree' just went back to school, Praireview A&M University, after 20 or more years from raising and getting her now grown children on their way to a great life. Please, if your program could or would be any service to my cousin I would truly appreciate it.
I am a 65 year old mother of four and grandmother of 9. I raised my four children by myself. Over the years I found jobs the best I could. A few years ago I was put on social security disability because I have arthritis so bad and had to have 5 surgeries to have some of the knuckles taken out of my fingers. There is no way that I can live on the disability check I get. For me a supplemental income is needed in order to survive. Nothing would thrill me more than to be able to pursue a career in an office setting. I would like to go back to college and take computer classes or accounting classes that would help me better my life, and complete the dream that I have to make my future and the rest of my life more meaningful, and let other people know that things are possible and dreams can come true, no matter what age you are!
