What is a Grant for Education?

Grants are monetary aids provided to individuals or organizations, usually from the federal or state government. They are typically need-based, which means that it is the financial component that determines if one is eligible for it.

What is a Scholarship?

College scholarships are basically awards granted to students. They are sometimes referred to as "financial aid awards". Scholarships usually cover tuition and other school fees. It may or may not provide allowances for board and lodging, books, and personal expenses. Scholarships are handed out based on a criterion which mirrors the standards of the donor. Usually scholarships are categorized as merit, need, sociology, institutional, and general.

There are many types of Scholarships for college and below is a quick breakdown and description of each one...

Merit: Merit-based college scholarships are given to students who excel in the fields of academics, athletics and arts. In addition, most scholarships are based on merit.

Need: Some college scholarships specifically reach out to financially challenged individuals. Need-based scholarships may also cover living costs aside from tuition fees. However, applicants for this type of scholarship must show sufficient proof of financial need in order to qualify.

Sociology: Sociology-based scholarships are offered to individuals based on gender, race, religion or nationality. Most of these student scholarships are provided by non-government organizations whose advocacy includes equality for the marginalized sectors of society. There are specific organizations who provide grants and scholarships to young moms, single moms, older women, and African-American women who are going back to college.

Institutional: Institutions such as colleges and universities also award scholarships to prospective students. If you have a college or university in mind, it would be good to get in touch with the admissions office to inquire about institutional scholarships.

General: Some companies or corporations give scholarships for college, based on their own standards, to the children of their employees. This type falls under the general category.

Comparing Student Scholarships & Grants for Education...

Do you know that up to 70% of the total number of college students have colleg scholarships, educational grants or other student aids to back them up? According to the US Census Bureau, 18.4 million students are enrolled in colleges and universities nationwide. Therefore, if you do the math, only 5.52 million students are independent of financial aids. In other words, college is indeed a financial challenge.

Although college grants and scholarships seldom cover 100% of school expenses, they can definitely give any college student the financial boost they badly need. Grants and scholarships will allow college students to go on with their schoolwork without worrying about their tuition or other school fees.

As previously stated, educational grants are typically need-based. Applicants with greater financial needs are more prioritized. On the other hand, free college scholarships are not awarded based on need alone. There are types of scholarships that are awarded based on skills, gender, nationality, or any factor the donor deems appropriate.

Take note: Some college scholarships come with a "bond". It is a contract that requires the scholarship recipient to work for the donor over a period of time. In case of non-fulfilment, the recipient will be required to pay a certain amount of money.

Definitely, college grants and scholarships are indispensable aids to both aspiring and continuing college students. With their help, college moms can sail through school without worrying about tuition and other school fees. Fortunately, the State or Federal government provides student assistance to deserving applicants. I am a mother of three boys with ages 3, 8, and 10 and one 19 year old step-daughter who has lived with me since she was 12. I am married to a wonderful man but we hardly make ends meet. I have panic disorder and I don't drive. I live in a rural community which makes it hard for me to get a job. I do what I can to make money from home, I breed dogs and raise chicken for eggs. But I am going to school online for Web design hoping that I will be able to make a decent living with an at-home-business. We are having problems with our income right now because of my ex-husband's job loss and my husband now is on a temporary layoff. I am hoping to start work soon. My breeding dog was also killed by another dog. So even my extra income was lost because I haven't been able to replace her. I need help with money for school and I am hoping you have suggestions for me.

While in college the first time, I wanted to study nursing. I changed my major after learning there was a two year wait list for the program. I finished my undergraduate degree, but I have always regretted not finishing in nursing. I would love to finish my nursing degree at Galen School of Nursing. But, I would need grants and scholarships to do so. I used a lot of financial aid during my undergrad and I am still paying for it and I am really struggling as a single mother now. I think this would allow so many more opportunities for me!! Please help!

I was pregnant at 21, had a year to go in college, but "had" to get married. I worked as a waitress, a babysitter ,and a Tupperware and Avon dealer. I had three children, while finishing up my degree in Education over 10 years. My husband wouldn't pay for my education, so I worked to cover the costs. I was pregnant when I took my first teaching job, worked for five years, moved with my husband and children (leaving my job behind), had another child, struggled with my sanity in a traditional, lonely, overwhelming, abusive and miserable marriage, until I was so mentally ill, I had to get out. As a single mother of three children, and two "over 18" but still needing support, I was without child support for three years through the divorce. I did raise those three, did my best to assist them in getting college education (father won't help with those costs despite 6 figure income)I have been working in mental health field as a foster child counselor, since teaching was not an option without the Master's degree I never had money to pursue. I can not advance without a Master's degree in my current field, either so remain at a poverty level income. I have remarried but it is all we can do with our low incomes to pay basic bills, and no hope of helping children complete their degrees. My being able to get my Master's degree would effect not only my education and future, but my children's as well, as I could support them more in completing their own. In addition to that, my personal dream has been to be an "educator of educators". I want a chance to attain a PHD, teach other educators and counselors, and write about the wisdom I have gained in living a life so full of challenges, and the rewards of never giving up. If, by some miracle, I won this scholarship, my life would be a testimony to what any mother can do, no matter what she is going through. I know there are better women and better choices for whatever reason, but I still have to try. It is my life-way to never stop trying to be a better woman.

I have been a single mom since my daughter was a year old. I managed to put myself thru school and obtained an AAS degree in paralegal studies and then returned to get my bachelors in legal studies. I specialty is in family law and have advocated and done pro bono work for single moms with children on issues of housing, homeless issues, child support and welfare problems. I want to return to get my masters in marriage and family therapy counseling. Having gone through a divorce and assisting families in the aftermath of a divorce or breakup, I would like to focus on issues before individuals reach the point of a breakup. The aftermath is so devastating and affects everyone for a lifetime!
